From 2013 to January 2024, the spot price of PV modules fell by 84%, 1,2 making PV power cheaper than fossil fuel generation in many regions and establishing it as the lowest-cost power source. 3 The significant cost reduction has spurred rapid growth in PV installations.
Meanwhile, the costs of manufacturing PV panels have dropped dramatically, with the cost of the commercial PV modules declining from 1.7 USD/W in 2011 to 0.2 USD/W in 2020 . In some countries, PV have even become the cheapest option for new electricity production plants .
The representative residential PV system (RPV) for 2024 has a rating of 8 kW dc (the sum of the system’s module ratings). Each module has an area (with frame) of 1.9 m 2 and a rated power of 400 watts, corresponding to an efficiency of 21.1%.
The projects in Brazil and Portugal only sell some of their electricity into the power purchase agreement, while the rest is being sold into the open market. All of these price are remarkable, but India is still the cheapest place to build solar power. India offers no incentives, no green credit, and no special relationships, just pure price.
