The Solar Water Pump Project demonstrates how an inclusive, collaborative approach and innovative solutions can help address critical water security challenges faced by Small Island Developing States (SIDS) like Vanuatu.
With this project, 17,000 households throughout Vanuatu will be supported to access non grid, renewable electricity through solar. With low population densities and large distances between communities, a key challenge for the project has been providing access to electricity in a way that is cost effective and efficient.
Prior to the project, Nguna Island residents, particularly during dry seasons, faced acute water shortages. The new solar-powered water pump system, however, promises a more reliable access relieving some of the hardship faced by surrounding communities.
Taloa, Vanuatu – January 30, 2024 – Water scarcity is a major issue for most of Vanuatu’s 327,000 inhabitants. A handover ceremony marked a turning point for over 700 Taloa community members as the Taloa Solar Water Pump Project was officially handed over to the community by the Global Green Growth Institute (GGGI).
“There are many islands in Vanuatu struggling with water supply and this project will assist in meeting Government targets for safe, reliable water supply for all”, he added. With a total funding of EUR1.5 million, the project will be implemented over 24 months.
