Most of the smart fiber supercapacitors are designed in this configuration, because it can be easily integrated with other fiber-shaped electronic devices, such as sensors or solar cells, to achieve multifunctional systems.
Furthermore, owing to the unique wire-shaped structure, fiber supercapacitors can be woven into fabrics or textiles, which exhibits great prospect for acting as wearable energy storage devices.
However, still there exist lack of available shape memory materials in smart supercapacitors and their responsiveness is also slow. In addition, the shape memory materials cannot contribute to the capacity, which will degrade the energy density of whole supercapacitor devices.
Recently, a variety of smart supercapacitors have been successfully designed and fabricated by developing novel functional component materials and device configurations. In this review, we will present the recent developments in smart supercapacitors with self-healing, shape memory, electrochromism, and photodetection functions (Figure 1 ).

Smart integration features now allow industrial systems to operate as virtual power plants, increasing business savings by 40% through time-of-use optimization and grid services. Safety innovations including multi-stage protection and thermal management systems have reduced insurance premiums by 30% for commercial storage installations. New modular designs enable capacity expansion through simple battery additions at just $450/kWh for incremental storage. These innovations have improved ROI significantly, with commercial projects typically achieving payback in 4-7 years depending on local electricity rates and incentive programs. Recent pricing trends show standard industrial systems (50-100kWh) starting at $25,000 and premium systems (200-500kWh) from $100,000, with flexible financing options available for businesses.
