The total Chilean solar portfolio is comprised of approximately 360 megawatts (MW) of generation, including more than 250 MW of operating projects and 110 MW of projects currently in or about to enter construction. The portfolio is forecast to be fully operating by the second half of 2023.
We present in this paper a public on-line, validated database of the solar energy resource for the entire Chilean territory (excluding Antarctic territories), calculated with a radiative transfer model and satellite data, with hourly data from 2004 until 2016 at 90 meters spatial resolution.
The 230-megawatt project, with a storage volume of 920 megawatt-hours, is designed for 4-hour operation and slated to be launched in 2027. Experts point out that the joint development of solar generation and energy storage is becoming vital to Chile, especially given the growing production volumes and limited grid capacity.
