In addition to microgrid support, mobile energy storage can be used to transport energy from an available energy resource to the outage area if the outage is not widespread. A MESS can move outside the affected area, charge, and then travel back to deliver energy to a microgrid.
Compared with traditional energy storage technologies, mobile energy storage technologies have the merits of low cost and high energy conversion efficiency, can be flexibly located, and cover a large range from miniature to large systems and from high to high power density, although most of them still face challenges or technical bottlenecks.
The primary advantage that mobile energy storage offers over stationary energy storage is flexibility. MESSs can be re-located to respond to changing grid conditions, serving different applications as the needs of the power system evolve.
Compared to stationary batteries and other energy storage systems, their mobility provides operational flexibility to support geo-graphically dispersed loads across an outage area. This paper provides a comprehensive and critical review of academic literature on mobile energy storage for power system resilience enhancement.
Several MESS demonstration projects around the world have validated its ability to support multiple aspects of the power grid. This subsection describes the scheduling of mobile energy storage in terms of theoretical approaches and demonstration applications, respectively.
