To balance energy use across the Australian economy, heat and fuel (chemical energy) storage are also required.
In March this year, the ARENA held an Insights Forum which covered energy storage and technologies that can bring system security to the grid. ARENA also partially funded a report from the CSIRO titled Renewable Energy Storage Roadmap to better understand the challenge.
The CEC said emerging LDES technologies coupled with the energy storage systems in place, would be the best suite to appropriately manage Australia’s needs. In March this year, the ARENA held an Insights Forum which covered energy storage and technologies that can bring system security to the grid.
The report finds that energy storage is both a technically feasible and an economically viable approach to responding to Australia’s energy security and reliability needs to 2030, even with a high renewables generation scenario.
As Australia advances its clean energy ambitions, battery storage stands as both a technological necessity and a financial opportunity, delivering reliability, sustainability, and long-term economic gains for investors and the broader energy market.
This is not the first transmission-connected battery that uses grid-forming control in Australia. In 2018, a 30 MW battery with ABB’s grid-forming control was commissioned at the Dalrymple substation in South Australia. Figure 1 shows the current and near-future landscape of grid-forming batteries in the NEM.
